50/50 Draw   Message 34156Sat, 24 October 2015 18:01

In Dave's absence I will put the 50 50 result on here, rather than the FaST site as normal.

Winning ticket was 15821 winning £76 and won by John Davey.

Congratulations to him, and thanks to Steve, John and Paul for helping in mine, and Daves absence.

Apologies for the occasional lack of clarity with the pics - the drizzly rain showers ruined my long lens so I used a spare lens which isn't so sharp. Some positive, attacking play in the second half has given me hope we'll beat VCD on Saturday :-)

This forum tries to be fair, allowing a right of reply.

Spencer's reply is now a locked topic. This to avoid posters with grudges (and they do exist) derailing a valid discussion.

All further thoughts on the start of the season and the management team should be added to this thread:-

Please do not start new threads covering the same topic - they will be deleted and you'll have to retype your message!

Managers Notes   Message 33558Mon, 21 September 2015 10:42

I've decided after a long Saturday night and Sunday to put a few points down for our supporters to clear up a few issues and at least give some sort of reply mainly to what's written on our forum. Communication in Non League can often be so restricted to a few lines in a weekly paper or two minute interview so as a one off I'll give my thoughts and comments.

First and foremost I have to apologise for Saturdays performance especially the second half which wasn't good enough. Those of you who have seen our first seven games I hope will agree this was our first really poor performance. We were competitive and unlucky in all the previous games but despite another ridiculous decision on Saturday that allowed the key third goal it did not disguise the fact that in the second half we were poor. Individual errors again cost us but we didn't pass the ball at all in the second half against 10 men which is unlike us. However we have been playing competitive football for THREE weeks and the constant abuse from five or six supporters on the forum is in danger of damaging a good team as I know some of the players look at it. Now I can take it and 99% of it is aimed at me and since the day I arrived nearly four years ago a small number of 'fans' have had it in for me but for once I'm going to give a little more information just to give you a little idea of the decisions we have to make and to clear up some 'misunderstandings'. Bottom line the results are not good enough YET. Saturdays second half was poor but we have only just started the season and performances have some a huge amount of promise with no luck at all but that will even itself out over the season. We've made a deliberate policy this season to try and entertain as well as get results, we are looking to stabilise the team as the club has done off the pitch and begin the rebuilding process.

Managing a team is not just putting 11 players on a team sheet and keeping fingers crossed and there is so much that goes on behind the scenes so just to help a few of you to understand some logic this is what happened on Saturday-

We added four new faces as we needed more strength in depth. Adam was suspended, Nick Brown still injured, Jack is nursing an injury and is not available for Tuesday so we wanted to give him the full week off to fully recover for our punishing upcoming schedule, one other player didn't train as is always away on trials with League Clubs and I doubt will be with us shortly, Timi injury, our potential right back, just isn't clearing up as we hoped so I was offered a dual registration temporary right back for cover (and how much criticism have I had not doing that earlier?! Problem is Jack did a reasonable job playing out of position and who is paying for this extra player each time.......?) The goalkeeping position has also been carefully monitored. There is no way we can afford two keepers but for the past four weeks had an agreed well known local keeper ready to come who then got ill. His colleague then got sent off which delayed his arrival further and he should be available to challenge Victor after Saturday. Victors had a tough start at this level and again has had no luck but please also remember the fantastic saves he has made and he is a lovely person who like the others is giving his all. I do not have the funds to just get in new players and this 'revolving door policy' is not true. We have played a similar squad this season but with injuries, suspensions and unavailabilities we have to add cover. As our opponents might read this there is another reason I signed an extra centre back but that is the almost daily battle I have at this club and I won't announce the upcoming temporary unavailable player. The extra striker coming in for FREE gives us security on the dangerous ground we have with the Cheltenham loanees that are getting attention due to the goals they scored, Bobbie is also struggling with an injury. How incompetent would I be not to take a quality player for free if and likely the loans get recalled? Like clubs that I loan to I have to give an undertaking regarding an initial start and I thought Tommy did well on his debut. I work to the craziest of budgets as I've mentioned many times before so its vital that I continue to use my numerous contacts to bring in players for as little cost as possible. Out of the four players arriving , three should be long term and I expect only one or two will depart to cover the cost with a few of our squad players going out on dual registrations to get game time. For those of you travelling to Basingstoke tomorrow I made it clear to the squad that we would be playing the lads that haven't had much time on the pitch to give them a chance to show what they can do so their will be a big changes tomorrow against the full Basingstoke side as named by my opposition manager on Saturday evening so it will be a tough test for sure and another opportunity for the statisticians to have a go at me. However my belief is that we already have strong core of a very good side here that requires only a bit of tweaking in a couple of positions to climb the table. Five league games in is ridiculous to make assumptions either way and the positives completely outweigh the negatives. For the negative bleaters on the forum I've been grateful to the supporters that have come up to me saying how excited they are by this group of players and it is my intention to give them every chance. The injuries, suspensions, unavailabilities, bad luck and individual mistakes need careful management though in order to keep moving forward. The players need to learn and be told what goes wrong like the poor management of the last ten minutes against Staines or the lack of short quick passing against Enfields 10 men for 30 minutes yet also encouraged to keep playing attractive football that will yield results soon enough. There is no lack of desire to get it right in the dressing room and it will come right given time and a bit of tweaking.

On top of all the above we have the FA Appeal shortly which once and for all will determine the penalty for putting our past behind us. I have my own views what that is likely to be and it will be tough but its the right way to move forward. Despite rubbish written by a couple of biased 'supporters' NO ONE would ever paid over £2m to clear a CVA, you can be a League one side for those type of figures. To my knowledge no even vaguely reasonable offer has been made to buy the club and certainly I've not stood in anyones way so thats more rubbish being spread. The position of the disputed debts left the position untenable and the fact is you only have to look at our wonderful stadium to see why we face this position. To say that I knew what I was getting into is total insanity, hence I called in the Police. £2m is a ridiculous figure and you only need to look at the actual list of over a 100 potential creditors to see the true story, the club didn't pay any bills for years and we are paying for it and still will be for some time in different ways. Where do some of you think ANY playing budget comes from? Each game at Cherrywood due to us becoming a certified stadium costs over £1000 just to put on, never mind various surveys, maintenance etc. The Club even considered paying just expenses and it will be tight to get through the little we have committed already so bear that in mind when I make decisions of who signs, plays etc. Of course that was before the club has to find £30000 bond just to start......... No club has a divine right to exist never mind win matches, we are making slow steady progress and will continue that unless something dramatic changes.

As to the personal attacks on me well my "EGO' as stated reminds those of you with brief memories that I've been here nearly four years after managing at Step 5 and four for the previous five years. I kept this club up for the previous three season on the most tiniest of budgets playing some great football at times, still achieved safety with numerous point deductions, won the odd manager of the month and had a sniff of a decent run in the FA Trophy last year before losing to the eventual winners- all with both hands tied firmly behind my back. Of course I've made mistakes and last season was truly horrible but as I told the board before our pre season game with Orient it was coming with our budget, you can't keep attempting to play at this levels with such restrained finances. Teams with the money generally are at the top, those without at the bottom and we just try and skip the odd League place or two. My numerous contacts have brought in so many cheap or free loans and we will continue to benefit from these supporting our core players. As I said earlier the current crop are a good bunch that will come true despite what is thrown at them. With the additions of Ryan both on and off the pitch and Marc we have the makings of a exciting new management team that includes both a UEFA A and B coaches as well as local and national contacts. It all takes time but again we are THREE weeks into the season and will need to adjust to this League and our new squad.

Loyalty goes both ways, over £1m of my money went into this club to try and stabilise the mess. I'm still paying for it so please remember that for those few who complained for so long about the PRE roof, kitchens etc. I'm not forgetting about our wonderful volunteers at all and they are why I'm still here, my "EGO' has nothing to do with it, my only personal mistake was not leaving when I had the chance but I owed it to the fantastic volunteers and supporters who do turn up and assist or support from a distance not the keyboard warriors 'from me to you' types with obviously have too much time on their hands who will slag me off whatever I do.

I deserve a hard time with our performance on Saturday no doubt and take full responsibility but now is the time to get us going again on the pitch as the future off is secure enough to continue the rebuilding process that has started over the past two years. Football is about opinions and everyone is entitled to their own. A few never have and never will give me any credit but that's partly my fault from a mistake over 25 years ago, I can't turn back time. However we've done a lot of good here restoring a chance to survive in amazing surroundings and I will continue to do that until told otherwise.

For those of you that support the club and me I thank you and I will continue to do my best as always, for those who you who will respond to this email with more abuse etc, then I couldn't care a less.....

Onwards to a big double header this weekend, a week is a long time in football and we are due a bit of luck,

Up the Boro

Spencer

Bideford    Message 32493Sat, 15 August 2015 17:25

We have a FA Trophy tie coming up, so here's a scouting report of their game at King's Lynn today. Firstly, Lynn were dire and deservedly lost 1-0. Bideford didn't once play through midfield, their game consisted of percentage long balls and, er, that was it. The right back has got a long throw and their minuscule no. 11 is tricky. Defensively they're comfortable dealing with anything in the air - it remains to be seen how they would deal with oppo that keep it on the deck and use the full width of the pitch as Lynn were very narrow and kept getting caught in possession because their midfield was a disorganised rabble today. So the message is - keep it on the deck and play crisp pass and move, and don't bother with percentage stuff into the channels.
