Charles Mortimore MBE   Message 49872Wed, 09 October 2019 18:02  Go to next message

Today we said goodbye to Club President Charles Mortimore.

A full Chapel with many friends and colleagues form all his previous Clubs and Associations attended to celebrate a very full life.

Moving tributes were given by Geoff Chapple Woking F.C, Jeff Smith Cove School and Cricket Club, and Garry Ward on behalf of Farnborough F.C., and family members.

Also in attendance were Terry Owens from Aldershot, representatives of the Schools F.A., former Boro Chairman Dick Molden, the wife of former Chairman Alan Churchill, former Team Managers Alan Taylor and Ken Ballard, plus many more friends and colleagues from his long career.

What was notable, however, was the absence of any current Senior Official of Farnborough F.C.!! Owner, Chairman, Secretary, Manager, no one!!

If apologies have been presented in advance then I apologise, but to me non attendance is disrespectful to a true legend of local football, and a great servant of Farnborough Town and F.C.

He may not have been around much due to his age and ill health, BUT HE WAS STILL THE CLUB PRESIDENT!!!

There is a stand named after him!!.
There is a turnstile block named after him!!

Is all that meaningless?? Is it out of sight out of mind?

We can all turn out in memory of a wonderful Club Steward, and rightly so but not, it seems, for a ninety year old president!!

Clubs are built on traditions, and memories!

MAYBE THAT'S WHY THE 'CLUB' PART OF FARNBOROUGH F.C. IS FAILING!!

R.I.P Charles
Some of us will miss you, and thanks for all you did!!

R.I.P Charles and I've said my piece on a previous post about how I feel about the man and what he did for the game in the local school. A true legend.

Don't think this is the time to be airing grievances on any current owners.

My condolences to the family and I trust Charlie had the send off he deserves

I agree. But it is still disappointing that the Club has been tone deaf on this occasion. Erm,it is a Club, isn't it? And not a vehicle for indulging a narcissists dreams?

Wake up.It would be good for everyone if you do.

For everyone's attention.

The Secretary did not attend, as he has recently visited the Crematorium following the death to his 26 year old nephew. Who was raised as a son to him and his still grieving his loss.

Kevin Dyer had a fall at the club on Saturday badly injuring his hip again. He is currently unable to walk.

Phil Martin is on a mandatory 14 day training course for his work.

The Chairman, Owner and Manager, all did not actually know Charlie. So could not be considered as friends or colleagues.

As you pointed out Bob Garry Ward who spoke at the service represented the Club in his role of Life Member, together with John O'Hara.

Thanks for your reply and explanation Jim, and commiserations on your own personal loss.

Best wishes to Kevin too. Hope all goes well.

"The Chairman, Owner and Manager, all did not actually know Charlie. So could not be considered as friends or colleagues."

So neither The Chairman , Owner or Manager knew the Club President.

How sad is that.

Have we never sent someone to represent the club on such occasions in the past?

This is a totally inappropriate thread to be conducting a witch hunt. Charlie stopped coming to games many years ago and several club members have kept in touch and visited him from time to time. The club was officially represented by Garry and John. We are severely stretched at the moment due to several issues beyond our control.
Charlie was a great man and a role model to many in the area. A thread with his name at the top should respectfully remain about him and no one else.

Phil Martin

I don't think there is a witch hunt Phil. Just why the owner and manager of this Club failed to join in the commemoration of our Club's President. It doesn't matter if either knew Charlie or not, it's about the right thing to do.
