Special for Bob and Nigel   Message 48625Sun, 03 February 2019 10:24  Go to next message

Sir Edward Elgar, famous for 'Land Of Hope And Glory' was a lifelong Wolves fan.
He wrote the first football chant entitled 'He Banged The Leather For Goal' in honour of 1890s striker Billy Malpass.

Nice one Brian!

A slightly different musical genre, Robert Plant is a life long fan too.

Thanks Brian, you truly are one of a kind to find that sort of trivia!!

It's going well so far for Wolves, and long may it continue.

If it is still the same in two or three seasons time, second season syndrome and all that, then I will be very happy!

Nigel said 'Nice one'

That reminds me that there was a football chant for Spurs beloved by Irvine, myself and others entitled 'Nice One Cyril' referring to Cyril Knowles who is sadly no longer with us.

Spurs fans have recently paraphrased that which goes:
Nice one Heung-Min
Nice one Son
Nice one Heung-Min
Lets have another one!

Sorry, chaps. Game over.

We have Ralph McTell. Streets of London, don't you know? A Fulham stalwart whose song will last for ever.

Just don't mention the Michael Jackson statue...

You are being too modest, Mickey. What about another famous Fulham fan .... (Bend It Like) Uri Geller?

He wasn't one of ours! I think he took Jackson to Exeter a couple of years before our 'visitation', which I observed personally.

Trouble is, when you see someone who looks like Michael Jackson you assume he is an impersonator... Makes a change from the 11 there at the moment pretending to be footballers!

See you all at Salisbury...

Sorry Mickey I raise your Ralph McTell ( song that will last forever) with Noddy Holder's Christmas pension fund!!

By the way, what position DID Mr. Jackson do for Fulham to warrant a statue?

We are still trying to work it out Bob. All I know is things have gone from bad to worse since said statue was removed...

Did you know I bought Noddy's Xmas present last year? True... he was looking for a rare CD but wouldn't shell out £70 on eBay. I got it for him for £6.99! What a skinflint. 😈

Was it removed during the close season Mickey, as Fulham had a roaring season last year to get promoted, or is it just lack of serious investment this time round?

Wolves found backers to throw megabucks at it, which seems to be working so far, but deep down I have reservations as to whether it is good or bad, or how long it will last.

I despise what Man City have/are doing, and others that have tried it in the past, Chelsea, Man U, and the like, and I can't really justify what Wolves are doing either.

It ultimately ruins football, especially at lower levels, and leagues become mini leagues within leagues, those that have and those that don't, advantaged only by those that do!!

We've even seen similar events/investments at first hand at our level, not to the same scale of course, and it usually ends in disaster, as we can testify!!

We were fortunate to go up last year Bob, purely due to the arrival of Mitrovic on loan.
The other loanees didn't stay so we only had half a team. 'Fail to prepare=prepare to fail'. Wolves assembled a Prem team before they got there; we panicked!
Oh yeah, some say we still have a statue at the Cottage- called Tim Ream!

Fosun, the owners at Wolves, have taken calculated risks rather than throwing money around in the hope that something will stick. Through building a strong relationship with Jorges Mendes a top class manager was appointed and young players who were on the fringes at the likes of Atletico, Porto, Monaco and Benfica were brought in on season-long loans. If the risk didn't come off then the loans would have been cancelled. So money would have been lost, but not disastrously so.

Last year, it did pay off and the likes of Neves, Jota and Boly are now signed permanently. The same tactic has been deployed this season and, as things are going well, Jonny has now signed permanently and I'd place a large bet on the Jimenez and Dendoncker loans being made permanent too. It's also helped massively that experienced class acts like Patricio and Moutinho were signed cheaply, although Patricio's fee eventually climbed to £16M.

If the present rate of progress is maintained then the big issue will be Molineux, which is too small. Fosun are already talking about relocating to a greenfield site, but I'd prefer that they develop Molineux to its full potential, a 45,000 capacity if memory serves.

An update for Bob. Seems the owners are going for redeveloping Molineux. They want to restore the South Bank to its former glory. Never have understood how a behind the goal terrace holding 27,000 was turned into a tiddly little seated stand:-
