Hello Wimborne, goodbye Banbury   Message 46797Sat, 09 June 2018 00:24  Go to next message

Shaw Lane, a vanity club somewhere in South Yorkshire, are folding, so the FA is rejigging the 2018/19 allocations:-

http://www.banburyunitedfc.co.uk/news/league-allocation-2314 072.html

IN (to Southern League South): Wimborne
OUT (to Southern League Central): Banbury

Also Fleet are affected at level 4 and are NOT happy.

Shaw Lane is a Company sponsoring a Club in Barnsley who originally wanted to be come Barnsley AFC, but were denied by protests from Barnsley F.C.
The use of a Company as the 'official' name of a Club has been contested for some time, and looks to have reached a head now.

As for Banbury? well I have always contended that they were in the wrong division.

Glad some good has come of it.!!

Shaw Lane is actually the area of Barnsley where the ground was. It backed into Barnsley rugby club and in front was the cricket club. The company name was Aquaforce, and was dropped under FA rules when they got promoted to step 4.

They then moved to Athersley Recreation and shared the ground due to there own ground be ing constantly under water if it rained.

Right, as ever, Mark. I forgot the name Aquaforce, but they certainly ruffled a few feathers in those parts!!

I was in Wimborne today. Good news for me; Poole, Dorchester and now Wimborne next season!

Better get used to it Mickey, as I can't see anyone stopping them for the title this season.
Hereford, Kings Lynn and Slough all shot through, so they must be quietly confident!!

What have they done to upset you anyway?

I recall famous wins in Weymouth. The first, at their old ground, was a Simon Read masterclass. More recently, Frank Gray's team, including Sestanovitch playing at his best, showed the eventual ConfSouth champions the way home - probably the best ConfSouth game I've ever seen.

Seem to remember (many moons ago) Boro winning there something like 4-1 in the FA Cup.

The Frank Gray game I can (only vaguely) recall. Cheered myself hoarse with Paddy Hayes and others. Must try and find a match report!

Darn it!

This is a tease from the Times... Gives details but fades out if you haven't a subscription.

Does anyone else still own the Highbury FA Cup scarf I am modelling?

I suppose it all depends on if there were any objections to the new name by the senior Clubs!

There certainly were in the Barnsley and Brighton cases. Can't imagine what they were concerned about really!!

It works O.K. in Oxford with City and United. In fact it worked the other way round, as Oxford United were originally Headington United, and City were in existence long before!!

There was for a good many years a Reading Town FC (I remember seeing them play in the CCLeague at Godalming Town). They were closed down by their owners; a Trade Union in 2017.
Highmoor and Ibis have taken over the Scours Lane ground so it probably made sense to have a Reading title.
A family connection is also involved the Richardson brothers were/are managers one being at Reading Town and the other at H & I.
Hope I've got my facts correct.

I note that in nearly all papers, including today's NLP, that Banbury is still listed as a Southern League south Club, rather than a Midland section club!

Did this transfer actually happen , or do they have to wait for League AGM's to confirm?

I believe they appealed along with Fleet who were also caught up in the merry-go-round. The Southern League AGM was yesterday, but the appeals aren't being heard by the FA until Monday week.

They are listed in Southern League Central. Going to be interesting as to what happens as Fleet may resign from the league. Ridiculously late to have an appeal less than 5 weeks before the season starts.

All appeals heard today have been rejected. All three unhappy with the decision. Fleet thinking of resigning as cost is 10k more than they would have had in isthmian. Could have saved all the by playing one shirt in west and one more in Isthmian.

There is a vacancy at step 6 combined counties did 1 if Fleet choose to do this. Or Fold.
