Stay Away Fans   Message 46671Mon, 14 May 2018 15:43  Go to next message

Ok lets liven things up a bit on here. What are your exact reasons for staying away? I find it hard to accept that long time fans have just turned their back on a club they once loved. I am by no means a Day fan but he has done exactly what he said he would do, as far as we know we are debt free, last season we got promoted and this season we stayed up. Lets be realistic we are not going to get top end players for peanuts which is what people expect. We are where we should be League wise so what do we realistically expect?

Don't recall anyone expecting top end players for peanuts.

Not having a constant revolving door where the team changes so dramatically every game would be nice, so that there's some sense of continuity.

Seeing some kind of progression in the coaching so that obvious deficiencies seem to get attention.

To be honest, your last line sums it up for me. If we are where we should be why bother going? If there's no hope of anything more, no ambition (which doesn't mean living beyond our means), why expect people to flock to the club?

Edit: although, to be clear, my overriding reason for staying away is that I moved to another part of the country.

I don't stay away, but don't go as often as I used to.

The clue is in the title of all sporting clubs; the word "Club".

Club - an organisation of people with a common purpose or interest, who meet regularly and take part in shared activities.

Longer terms fans have had to tolerate several examples of the above definition being replaced by "one man's plaything".

If the product on the pitch is good and the club is being adequately funded then, ok, most people tend to go along with it and new fans are attracted too. But we know how that story ends - the "plaything" loses its shine or the laws of financial gravity exert themselves.

This time there have been laudable atttempts to get the club to operate within its means. So far so good. But the on the pitch product is below par and the lack of engagement with fans and the wider community, not surprisingly, has led to apathy and poor attendances.

Yes, there are well funded clubs in our division. There are also plenty who run on very little, but most manage to produce teams that play coherent football worthy of the level. We, on the other hand, have a "here today gone tomorrow" squad that features some raw, but talented, youngsters in attacking positions and team management that shows few signs of how to assemble a football team that isn't picked apart with ease at this level, as the shameful goals-against stat (all 120 of them!) shouts out.

So, two things to stop the rot that is rapidly setting in:-

Firstly a programme of sustained, meaningful engagement with the current fanbase covering all elements of the club's operations. It's impossible to obtain buy-in when nobody knows what the offer is. Our fans are our best sales reps in persuading others to watch football at Boro', so energise them.

Secondly, a dramatic improvement in the management of the football side is required to build a stable squad that is encouraged to grow and develop. If that means new people then so be it - the time for amateur hour management has passed.

I personally stopped going because it was one drama to many and the enjoyment was completely gone. Why have a negative in your life and pay for it?

I couldn't stomach Spencer's version of the truth, the arrogance that hes better than us mere mortals.

As the team dwindled from familiar faces to revolving door, that was it. The club just became a badge.

Now I live far away. But I hope the clubs fortunes turnaround. I want Farnborough Football Club to succeed, but Spencer gives no reason to believe it will under his management. Saved the club? Not for me, more a steady of execution.

Spencer's personality is irrelevant to me - there have been worse human beings managing football clubs, there have been better ones.

What IS an important point is that it is very, very hard to maintain enthusiasm when your team is not even competing on a regular basis, to the extent that you're half expecting them to ship four, five, six or more goals, week-in, week-out. How many batting collapses are England cricket fans willing to endure before they start to find a better use for their time?

We may not expect to challenge in whatever league we're in, but we deserve better than a manager who can't get ANY group of players to do the defensive basics well at this level, no matter their pedigree.

Fourteen months without an away win, almost getting relegated three divisions in two seasons, letting in 120 league goals this term (and against not exactly world-beating clubs). These things drain the pleasure of watching the team you love. And knowing the manager literally cannot be changed means we all know there is much more of this to come.

"In the end, it became necessary to destroy the football club, in order to save it." - Spencer Day.

Ok picture this scene. You are a potential buyer/investor looking to get involved in a Non League Club, you do your homework and see that the once loyal fans are staying away and get crowds of 200 thus generating a lesser income thus affecting the player budget which in turn makes for a not very welcoming investment but another team of similar standing are getting crowds of 400 and doing fairly well who are you going to be more interested in? No one is going to invest or buy the club until things change and until the do we are stuck with Spencer.

Bob my point is Spencer is here for the long haul unless we get a buyer and thats not going to happen when we get crowds of 200. We need to make it a club worth buying and the only way to do that is to get the crowds back, its a vicious circle i know but its the only way

Spencer is here, yes. That's fine.

But he should 'persuade' his chairman - who I'm sure is very much his own man (lol) - to appoint a competent manager to improve the product on the pitch while overseeing other matters so that we get some gate revenue back.

Why do we have to accept a manager whose record would have seen him sacked from every other club in the country as an indefinite fait accompli? Answer me that.

Think above comments / responses sum it up. Product on the pitch not good enough.See no reason to think team performances will improve next season if same management in place.

I agree wholeheartedly, Nigel, although I have been staying away much more than you. The simple fact was that, having followed Boro home and away for over 25 years, having been a long term season ticket holder and having been through all the "challenges" that have been thrown at us over those 25 years or so, I woke up one morning and thought what the hell.

I think I started to lose my enthusiasm during the period when the fans were being "encouraged" to take a financial stake in the Club especially when it was valued at, if my memory serves me right, £1.9m. I thought I was on a different planet. When I started to notice that I couldn't remember the players names, I thought I was having more senior moments until my son kindly pointed out that the revolving door was revolving faster than my ageing memory box could cope with. And too often, it seemed, it was the fault of the fans.

Frankly, I just ran out of steam. Like many other fans of that era, I was happy to put up with all the sh*t as long as I felt connected to the Club and the players and was able to enjoy them playing, win or lose. When I stopped enjoying the 'product' and lost the connection with the Club and players, it was difficult to find the enthusiasm to turn up week in, week out in the hope that it might change. So far, it hasn't but who knows. Football fans are ever the optimists, I am too but not enough to come back yet.

I should just add that we had some pretty poor owners during that period also but we usually had decent enough managers which gave us something to hang on to.................

Though whether I live in the West Midlands, America (a dream of mine, to emigrate to America, though possibly after Trump is no longer president) or anywhere else, I will always have a passion for Farnborough, a more magnificent town you could not name.

After many years of going to most home games I only went to one last year.
Put simply I've got out of the "habit" of going to footie every other Saturday. Last year was a waste of space, with only one team going down it soon became apparent that even Spencer couldn't muck it up.
However, there's was nothing to tempt me back. There's no sense of club anymore and no connection with the players. The amount of players we got through is crazy.
Building a team is simple. Start with the 11 you want and unless you are doing really badly stick with them. If you spot a better player then by all means replace what you've got. Lack of money is no excuse, yes you will lose players from time to time, but there are many clubs in this division who do manage and do better!
TBH I'm not sure if or when I will come back, the way things are going there only seems to be season after season of struggle under the current management. At any other club, with the kind of runs Spencer has had he would have been sacked about 15 times already!
