Goodbye everyone...   Message 45799Tue, 06 February 2018 18:17  Go to next message

Evenin' all...

They say all good things must come to an end and sadly I've decided to stop taking photographs for Farnborough FC.
Almost five years after the lovely Luke first put one of my photos on the front cover of the programme I've decided to give up the snapping role.
I was going to wait until pre-season to see which league Boro would be placed in - in the hope that it would be Isthmian based and not be so cripplingly expensive as this season's trips have been for me. However something happened last night that pushed me over the edge.
I innocently posted a link to the Get Surrey feature on the crowd issues at the Hereford match on my Twitter feed. The paper had approached me during the day and asked to use some of my photos. Then later last night I received an anonymous message from the @FarnboroughFC Twitter account "Not great publicity for the club...."
I was a bit stunned by this. After all, I can post what I want on my own Twitter feed and the message was blunt and seemed quite sinister. The message had no name attached. I absolutely knew it wasn't Dom as he is so utterly polite and kind and wouldn't ever be so cowardly. Even so as a gesture I did delete the post but replied with the following message "Neither are heavy defeats!"
The unknown respondent then said "The FA don't instigate investigations and fine you for heavy defeats."

I've been led to believe that the messages came from Rob Prince. Nice as it was of him to get in touch I'd have preferred it if over the years he'd maybe sent an occasional thank-you or token comment of appreciation for all the images I'd provided to the club.
It's sad that I'm no longer willing to volunteer for the club due to this seemingly cold attitude but I don't want anyone like that to personally prosper at my expense. The apparent control-freakery at the club over the years has at times been very unsettling but whilst it didn't affect me directly I carried on regardless - happy to be part of the Yellow army of volunteers. Being censored by someone who has hardly said a word to me over the years is unforgivable. As a student of politics I liken the attempts to control and censor to the sort of thing North Korea would do.
Quite frankly, the tweeter had a flaming cheek and I cannot go on helping the club out any more.

I wish every single volunteer, player and fan all the very best for the remainder of the season. Farnborough is an amazing club with so many warm, kind-hearted souls. Thank you for all your support you've given me over recent years.

Now I'm off to buy a Euromillions lottery ticket. I still have this romantic notion of buying the club, turning it into a community trust club and watching it flourish ;-)

COYY

xx

That's utterly disgraceful of whoever it was. Really sorry to hear this.

I for one will miss you and your cheery smile at away matches Dom. Very sad to read what has happened to you, but some how, I am not surprised. Your photos will be sadly missed and I know from my time at the Club that you put your heart and soul into everything you did and all at your own expense.
There are many clubs in Essex that would appreciate your talents. Many thanks from me for all that you did for the Boro and I am sure a lot of the other supporters would say the same.
Will look forward to seeing you again when we play north of the river.

I'm truly sorry to hear about that Don... You did nothing wrong. The actions of those few Hereford 'fans' (deliberate inverted commas there) were completely out of line and you were doing your job in recording what was going-on at the match in your role as the official photographer.

What happened WAS a newsworthy event that was (and and has been) reported elsewhere, so to point fingers and blame you for publicising it is crass in the extreme, whoever it was who did so... The incident itself was not the club's fault and it does not reflect badly upon FFC in the slightest, just Hereford and a couple of their idiot 'fans'. To suggest you are heaping bad press on the club is foolish and wrong-headed in the extreme, if anything the club was shown in a positive light for its reaction to it by speaking with the Hereford fans and getting to the bottom of it establishing culprits rapidly with the correct action taken by involving the police, rather than causing a flash-point that could have turned nasty.

If what you allude to is true, its almost as if we're stepping back to the darkest days of Higgs & Turberville.

A sad day when the club loses another volunteer.

A sad day for the club.

I second the sentiments in your final paragraph

"Now I'm off to buy a Euromillions lottery ticket. I still have this romantic notion of buying the club, turning it into a community trust club and watching it flourish ;-)"

And speaking of Essex, I am sure that your talents would be welcomed with open arms by Billericay FC.

And who the heck needs Rob Prince with proper geezers such as Glenn Tamplin around ?

This is such a shame, not only for you and your great photos but also for the club to respond in such a disrespectful manner.
Really really poor from the club.

Can't say I'm surprised.
Everybody knows about the twitter pseudonyms being used to peddle the "pro-Spencer" bumf, which have disappeared since we called them out. This reeks of the same half-witted stupidity.

You don't deserve that Don. If the club can't see you for the obvious asset that you are, it's their loss.

What a sad shambles this is all becoming.

I don't think he said he was going to stop watching Biro. Just stop taking photos.

Such a shame to be treated in such a way after several years of loyal volunteer service in providing fabulous photos.

An incredibly harsh and short sighted gesture, to a man who selflessly gave up his time and money traveling all over to take these images and allow the club to use them.
Still their loss will be another clubs gain. All the best Don!

Good lord this is just like nigelgate all over again. A loyal fan and volunteer who regularly goes above and beyond jumping before he gets pushed its not on. I hope the person who contacted you is ashamed of themselves

Don, thanks for all your efforts over the past years, and we as fans really appreciate what you have done for the Club, and the GOOD publicity it has brought!!

It's a shame that others can't see the value, and that it had to end this way!!

All the best, and I hope we meet up with you again sometime.

Sorry to hear this Don.

It is very unfortunate that as part of the fallout from the actions of a small number of Hereford fans at Saturday's game someone at the Club decided to target the messenger.

I totally understand the Club's desire to manage its reputation, however, from several sources, images and video of the incidents have been circulated widely on social media and the web, so the genie cannot be put back in the bottle.

Turning on one of our own, and doing it anonymously, is not a productive way to do this; a quiet face to face conversation about managing outcomes should such events occur again would have been far more appropriate.

Indeed, we're not far from anyone expressing an opinion that isn't in favour of the regime being banned from the ground are we? I remember Westley did that to someone.

On the plus side, I hear our current chairman is organising a massive parade in his own honour, so that's something....

Couldn't have put it better myself. This (situation) is a rather puzzling scenario which paints a bleak picture of where the club could be headed. Best of luck for the future Don!

Re: Goodbye everyone...   Message 45817 is a reply to message 45799Thu, 08 February 2018 07:19  Go to previous messageGo to next message

I am so overwhelmed by all your kind messages. Thank you.

At the heart of this is simply a story of a very willing volunteer and lifetime Boro fan waking up to the fact I've been exploited and taken for granted for too long by a heavy-handed owner who seems to have no public relations skills, who thought he exercised some control over me. He doesn't and never will and what's more I will continue to own the rights to all my photos and only I can do what I want with them. I feel that the tweeter must live in a world where they have always got their way. I'm a very independent soul and will not be bullied by characters like that so enough is enough.

I was never a paid volunteer, never employed by the club. In later years I enjoyed the privilege of free entry to matches and two cups of tea at home games but that's all.
Walking on the pitch at Cherrywood always gave me such a thrill. Quite unbelievable that years after standing on the terraces I was actually on the pitch snapping away! A huge honour.
So it's sad I won't be doing that again.

I've always defended the current regime by being grateful I still had a club to support. Thinking about it, this defence reminds me of the battered woman accepting the abusive partner when he says she'd be nothing without him and wouldn't survive on her own and so continues to put up with the abuse.
We all know that Farnborough fans really own the football club no matter what it says on some legalese at Companies House - in that, we are the heart of it. Things can change and will change one day and this Boro era will be history.

COYY

PS Sorry to give you all eye-strain with these long messages!

You would have thought if there was any genuine misunderstanding - seeing as the event has been aired in a public forum - that a contact would have been made by the club to clear-up any misunderstanding and offer an olive branch by way of conciliation?
