Fixtures Tomorrow   Message 43111Wed, 12 July 2017 17:23  Go to next message

Who does everybody want first?

I think the way the Southern League work is Slough will be August BH Monday and Boxing Day, Basingstoke on New Year's Day and Easter Monday.

Get ready for some Western trips midweek.

I will go for away to St Ives Town.

YAY!!

I'd like the longest trips to be on a Saturday and before the bad weather kicks in. Be great to have Tiverton away during the late summer so I can see my bro down in Plymouth. Mrs Snapperchap is still keen to go to Merthyr so hope that's a Saturday too.

I could hazard a guess that maybe Gosport, Frome and maybe one of Weymouth/Dorchester could be the midweek games.

Having said that though, the season under Francis Vines, our scheduled midweek matches were at Bedford and Cambridge.

Initial thoughts:

-Nice first away trip
-Slough at home on August BH Monday should draw a nice crowd. Expecting 4 figures there.
-Bit annoying Weymouth visit midweek as they will bring less and are one of the better supported sides.
-Hereford at home on a Sat, good. That's if neither of us get a Trophy run going.
- Same deal with Kettering, and FA Cup
- King's Lynn are the other good travelers so weenend home match good there.

Overall it's a good set.

I don't recall Lynn having a particularly good travelling following.

A reasonable number watch their Reserves in the Eastern Counties League D1 when the 1st team is away. The Ressies averaged 106 for home games last season and were the 3rd best supported team in their division.

Hmmm, not too bad I suppose. Hereford and Royston both being away on Tuesday nights is a bit of a bummer, and good to get Merthyr out of the way while the weather is reasonably good.

Otherwise, about what I expected, and there are bound to be a few adjustments as the cup games kick in!!

I take it that Redditch game on the 16th.Aug is a League game and not and FA cup prelim? and what round do we come in?

The Redditch United game on 16 August is a League game.

We enter the Emirates FA Cup at the First Round Qualifying, which will take place on Saturday 2 September.

I suspect that the First Round Qualifying Draw will take place on Monday 21 August.

Merthyr have a 3g Pitch, so it doesn't matter. Slough and Redditch also have these.

Can I also point I had no knowledge of the Slough / Basingstoke fixtures, just a rough guess on what they did last season with Fleet / Ashford.

I wasn't thinking about the pitch Mark, more the weather in that part of the world in December/January/February.
Bl***y cold and snowy in those Welsh valleys!!

It can be quite windy crossing the Severn Bridge too!

:0)

I was referring to the famous occasion when the team coach was crossing the bridge en route to Merthyr for a Tuesday night game. There was a fierce crosswind and the coach was acting as a sail, being blown sideways. The differential in the air pressure between inside and out led to a skylight and its frame shearing away from the roof, popping out and disappearing into the night. The driver didn't dare stop as that would have hugely increased the risk of the coach being blown onto its side. Another skylight was also threatening to pop out, but the combined might of Mark Turkington, Brian Broome and a broom handle (!) jammed through the frame prevented more damage.

On arrival at Merthyr the players carried on as if nothing had happened while the coach driver was left to ring around to find someone who could effect emergency repairs.

Re: Fixtures Tomorrow   Message 43149 is a reply to message 43140Fri, 14 July 2017 15:59  Go to previous message

I just remember one day whilst working down that way in January, and I got to the heads of the valley road, and started down the long hill, when it started to rain.
Steadily got worse, which turned to sleet and then the biggest snowstorm I have ever seen!!
Artic lorries started sliding and the road was blocked in minutes, and cars were becoming snow drifts.
Don't know how long it was but seemed hours before the cavalry arrived with snowploughs and blowers.
Never been so cold in my life!!
