Aldershot Town F.C.   Message 49184Tue, 11 June 2019 17:06  Go to next message

Today sees an announcement of a new 118 year Lease for the Recreation Ground, and Aldershot Town F.C., with a peppercorn rent of just £1 per year.

All subject to planning permission being granted, and after the current lease expires in 2023.

This, if successful, will give the Club a tremendous advantage in negotiations for future investment!

I hope our owners are taking note, and seeking similar deals??

We are the same Borough and Council after all!!!

An alternate take on the situation:

Property developers take over a club that has a dilapidated ground but some prime land surrounding it, throw a massive wobbly about wanting to develop the land. Council says no.

Owners deliberately decide to pull the plug on funding for the club and take it from the playoffs to relegation in one season with no promise of anything better for the season's to come giving a real prospect of no viable club and an empty ruin of a stadium.

They go back to the council cap in hand pleading poverty that will all be solved if they can redevelop the land so long as the council hand it over for free and while they are at it let them have the ground on a peppercorn rent... Meanwhile any money put in to the club has been 'directors loans' saddling the club with debt.

Council are faced with the prospect of yet another feature for its ghost-town of a centre and the loss of what revenue the football club brings to local businesses meekly acquiesce to the blackmail of the owners, who meanwhile carry-on not investing in the club and devaluing it further.

Owners finally get the land that they want for free, develop the land around the ground, but by putting flats on it not the hotel initially promised as they claim 'after investigating the hotel is not viable' and mysteriously the flats/ land is signed-over to satisfy 'directors loans' made to the company - flats are built, owners make-out like bandits and leave behind the husk of a club.

Couldn't be that this same scenario has played-out elsewhere in non-league footy time and again could it?
