End of an era   Message 48788Wed, 06 March 2019 00:41  Go to next message

No more public flying displays at the Farnborough Air Show ...
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-47463443

Not sure I'll miss them, to be honest. Nevertheless, the end of an era.

Understandable from a purely commercial point of view for TAG, but a huge financial blow to the local economy.

Losing 100k, or probably less over recent years, spectators spending huge amounts of money in the local area is not good!

As for the flying, and living directly under the flightpath, I have come to accept it as part of the life of an airport and bi- annual show, which brings billions to the national economy.

The airfield, R.A.E, and now a booming hub for aviation which is bound to increase, is what made Farnborough, and without it there would just be sprawling estates connected to Aldershot!

I can't be hypocritical against something I knew was there when I moved here!!

That's like those that move to a country village and complain about the church bells, or the smell from the farm animals!!

Attendances have been in sharp decline on the public days, while the regulations introduced since the Shoreham incident mean the days when crowds could be thrilled by the displays are now done and dusted. Lots of complaints were made at the last show, apparently.

I always thought it was a waste of money as I had little interest in looking at engine parts but last year they were charging ~£40 to watch a couple of planes take off and land.

If anyone really wants to go, take some time off work and get a temporary job. I worked there twice when I was a student and got paid to stand around watching the planes/litter pick.

Not sure it's a booming hub. I work by the airfield and very few companies are anything to do with aviation. Not sure BAE have any staff here anymore - their offices are currently empty. They just own the business park.

Not booming? Gulf Stream are building a new maintenance centre this year, bringing about 500 jobs.
Overall the business park employs over 5,500 people, though obviously not all to do with aviation. I'd say the area is booming.
